One of the earliest recorded pieced designs — Electric Quilt's block history cites examples back to the 1790s — yet the evocative name cannot be traced to any single original source. The block is nothing but half-square triangles; how you shade and turn them decides whether it reads as Broken Dishes, Old Tippecanoe or Whirling Blade. The recorded names follow the layout, not the unit.
